Stirling Crash, Norfolk, July 1941

I took a trip to St Neots last Saturday to visit the intrepid group who are building a Stirling forward fuselage & cockpit there, and mightily impressed was I as to the dedication and quality of the workmanship. This was all thanks to 12jaguar (John) on here.
Whilst there I picked up a copy of ‘The Stirling Story’ by Michael J. Bowyer for a small donation.
The book mentions a crash of a Stirling Mk.I of 7 Sqn. at the Norfolk village of Newton Flotman on the morning of 15th July 1941, following a raid on Hannover. My other stuff relating to No.3 Group is currently elsewhere but I’m just wondering if anyone present can give me aircraft serial, list of crew (There was a Keith Deyell on board) and any other information on where the crash site was, and if it has subsequently been investigated, dug, explored etc?

Just an update, a chap helping me with my research spoke to the ex game keeper of an estate where the plane came down and he said that a Stirling wheel was in a farm building for 30 years after the war! It was then taken to Flixton Aviation museum. Now they only have a complete wheel of a Lanc, but said in the late 70s they had to ‘get rid’ of alot of tyres for Health and Safety reasons.

Shame looks like the tyre found of my grandads Stirling quite litterally went up in smoke!

There is a good photo of a line-up of 7 Squadron Stirlings in David Earl’s book, Hell on High Ground 2.
Among them is N6075, MG-A.
Later, while attached to the conversion flight with 101 Squadron, (and coded SR-W3), she crashed at Merryton Low, near Leek.

Stirling Bomber crash N6022 MG D

John,

I am aware that MG D 6022 was John Cruikshank’s (Pilot) Stirling, he was on leave when Witt along with the crew including my grandfather used it on the Hannover raid. Apparently they joked afterwards how Dennis Witt ‘pranged’ his Stirling!!

Thanks for the pictures, if you have anymore Squadron 7 related around about 1941 I will be grateful.

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian

As promised here’s the crew photo. I’ve been warned by our Chairman that this may not include all those who were onboard N6022 when she crashed.

Have you tried Parham and Thorpe Abbots museums Ian?
,I`m sure I`ve seen a display relating to your aircraft when touring the East Angian Museums in the early nineties.

The bits are nothing to get excited about, small remnants,as I`ve said the type of stuff thats ploughed up rather than dug out.I `ll have a look later for you,too many different aircraft to sort through to find them..but you are welcome to them when I find them :).

Moggy,

Yes thanks for this I was aware of the description but not in this document, many thanks it will add to my collection / research of ‘bits’.

I am really hopeful of bits of the aircraft, pictures and anyone that remembers the crash in that village, anything and everything will help.

Hindenburg says he has bits of that crash site, I would really like to obtain some pieces my family would be so grateful!!

stirling crash newton flotman 1941

No hoping you do!! have some bits and a picture of crew would make display look complete if you could!! marvelous!!

Hi Martin is this something you can help me with, I would love to obtain some relics from my grandfathers Stirling. I have sent you some private messages relating to it. Obviously this is all close to my heart due to the link I have with this Stirling. I am aware a bag of bits going to flixton aviation museum back in the 1970s but this was just lost in time. I would be interested to know what bits from my grandfathers crash site you have.

Kind regards Ian
