After the interest shown on this forum, the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection is pleased to announce that it will be holding the 1st Aerobilia aerojumble at the Museum (Old Sarum Airfield) on saturday 23 March 2013.
As said before, stall fees will be kept low and admission will include museum entrance. All proceeds will go to the Museum which is a registered charity.
The museum is very much hands on with access to cockpits etc.
It will be great for people to meet, chat, buy, sell, barter!
Hopefully it will become a regular fixture!

That’s a very nice Lightning cockpit you have there on your stall, Mr Hindenburg!
Did it sell? Or will it be at Shoreham? 🙂

I mainly took pics of the cockpits, the Harrier looking particularly nice. Only recorded one stall, others were available. Similar items may be available at Shoreham:rolleyes:

Fab day, went there with a few other forumites, hope to see this event firmly established on the aerojumble calendar.

Ahhhhh!
The Wellington lump seller is a forum member but I’ll let him identify himself if he wants to.
A spread of dates enables finances to be refreshed and other halves memories of previous purchases to dim a little.
Sometimes when I get up and drive off without hearing any moans (not that sort) and arrive at a boot full of smiling organisers and sellers and have a beer later and take some pics and buy some kit and have another beer and come home and unpack in complete silence for a curry with some Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, Free and AC/DC playing away to be followed by TalkSport, I reflect that being single does have its advantages..

Keeping the ‘Bilia Going
The Wellington cross section from memory was £50, a decent chunk at a very rough guess 70cm x 40cm. The seller may be a forum member?.
Yes I am a member but I was also with James who normally has a big van and square covered pitch with lots of space outside it too at Popham, selling lots of varied stuff besides aviation bits. I sold the Wellington bit though – I’ll try and find the Facebook link the museum’s photographer mentioned to me they wanted stuff posted to as I don’t have much space left on this Forum and I don’t have time to do comps to save on memory like I often do, so if anyone has it then be good to post it up soonest but I’ll look later.

I believe the welly bit did sell on. It was a lovely piece – nope I did not buy it! My jet lagged state brought an eccletic mix of stuff that I bought….enuff said!!!

From a buyer’s point of view it would be better if aerojumbles were spread through the summer, April is almost too early and September is almost too late given the way the weather is going. A spread of dates enables finances to be refreshed and other halves memories of previous purchases to dim a little. Also try to avoid clashes with other types of event. Not all can be avoided but it’s frutrating to have two or three events on the same day then nothing for another month.

I was hoping to get down but here in sunny Essex we had a few inches of snow which was not to much of a problem but the wind blew it into the roads and we had nearly a 3 foot drift in our lane so no chance of getting out.
It sounds like all that got there had a great time, well done to the organisers.
Hopefully now I can get to Shoreham then to Old sarum for the next one.

Thanks, BDAC
Had an excellent time at the BDAC jumble. Picked up a few nice things and it was good to attend a very different venue for a change.
I must especially thank Norm Hibberd, who gave me an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a few items. Also Trevor Stone, owner of the lovely U.16 Meteor, who gave us exclusive access and entry to the aircraft on the Friday.
Trevor is one of those quiet hard-working members who, in this instance, appeared to have drawn the short straw to do gate duty in the dreadful weather on the Saturday when he could, I am sure, have chosen the relative comfort of the display hangar.
It was good to see a few Forumites there too – glad you liked your fire extinguishers, Hindenburg:) I also met an interesting character who went by the name of Shor Tarse (;))at one of the tables. We got on well and it turned out he shared my love of the Phantom. He even, when I had spotted that he was wearing a 74 “Tiger” squadron hat, agreed to do a swap with my (plain) one. Thanks:)
My funny story of the day: I had spotted a nice book on the Phantom on one of the hangar stalls (run, incidentally, by a hoary old ex-Phantom pilot). The label said “£5 for hardbacks and £3 for softback books”. This was only a small hard back so I suggested “£3?” The look I got back said everything and as he fixed me with his steely glare (as only an old hoary ex-Phantom pilot can:D) he said “£5 – go and find another one!” I slunk away smarting from the rebuff and reconsidering that my old maxim of If You don’t ask, You don’t get
may not be so clever after all:o
Needless to say, I intend to attend the second event which is being proposed some time in September. The BDAC people were keen to stress that this (their first) event of this kind was very much a suck-it-and-see one and recognise that, for some, the timing wasn’t perfect. However, they seemed pleased with the results to the point that they were talking about the next one. I shall look forward to going there again later in the year.
Thanks again, all at BDAC for a well-run event.
Anon.

I really don’t know but I regularly see his stall at aerojumbles including Shoreham so guess that you may come across him or the section at Shoreham in the next couple of weeks if you are able to attend.

Sadly I couldn’t make it today but it sounds like it went well. Any more info on the Wellington bit? Was it expensive?

Yes, a great day out. Made to feel very welcome by the staff and met lots of good people, familiar and new. Made a bit of money, bought a few things (red Wessex stick!) and learned stuff. All in all a result. Still have stuff left for Shoreham. Thanks to the organisers!

Many thanx to all the stall holders and punters who came today. The museum was very pleased with this first event. We are hoping to do another, possibly in september.
I was late arriving at the event due to a slow flight from JFK! They lost my luggage too! The atmosphere was lovely with many happy faces. The weather did create a couple of no shows. I know others took photos.

Many thanks to BDAC for putting on this event,it was a most enjoyable day and it was good to catch up with some old friends,
I even managed to shift some other old “friends” but more importantly i bought quite a few more:)…….the table cost was very reasonable too,and the location in the SW is ideal,…we need events like this
The collection at Old Sarum is displayed very well and it was great to have access to the many cockpits,
I look forward to the next event when i hope it may be a bit warmer;)

Thank you Tony and volunteers
Just a quick post to thank Tony and the volunteers for a great day out. The staff were really helpful, the location was great, with all the cockpits open to veiw.
I felt that, as someone who has not attended a Aero jumble either as a stall holder or punter, this event captured the orginal feeling that I felt before the advent of the E bay.
I met lots of old faces and shifted a ton of stuff, mostly to my wifes delight!
I do hope that Tony and team will hold another event, I will certainly attend.
I do feel that we are short on A/J events for us who collect in the west country areas, fuel cost really do have to be factored in these days when choosing to attend events.
Tim.

Pleased to hear it seems to have been successful, although it feels odd to be reading about a ‘jumble I wasn’t at!
Not wishing to stir up the controversy, but I didn’t feel able to justify another long and fuel expensive trek “down south” when Shoreham is only days away (and booked and paid for since last April).
If it can be arranged for another (warmer) date next year, I’ll look forward to making the trip!
Meanwhile, yes, photos please! 🙂

Just come back after a 200 mile round trip, enjoyable day, a good variety of stalls selling everything from instruments, grips, aircraft wreckage, models, books, art and prints etc. Nice to meet other forum members and enjoyed walking around the museum. Staff made us feel very welcome and all the cockpit exhibits were open for inspection. Stuff I saw for sale were a Shackleton prop, spinner and complete Shackleton pilots instrument panel, Complete or mostly complete Hunter and Phantom quarter panels, HS748 and Canberra yokes, corsair grips, Westway Viscount model, Fairey swordfish foot pedals and rig, large piece of cross section from a Vickers Wellington, WW2 and post war instruments and lots more! Hopefully someone would have taken photos. In all a very enjoyable day, I hope the weather didn’t deter to may people (I’m sure it did) look forward to next year. Thanks to the organisers of this event.
