Memory from my time in RAF ATC (1956-58) tells me that the standard windsock was fully extended by a wind of 15 knots. Is this right? Chatting to some friends it seems awfully low by modern standards, although I could understand it as being very relevant in 1914-18.

I wonder if there is always an odd windsock in the drawer?……

Nerdy question but would be good if anyone can confirm the colour of wartime windsocks, I believe the orange ones are a modern international standard and that the red and White striped type are wartime issue.

I didn’t realise this until I just asked in the tower, but the windsock is odered by the knots wind speed that it becomes fully extended, 20 – 30 knots seems usual in a military tower.
We also found reference to a Federal Standard (I’m assuming U.S.?) that the sock should be fully extended at 17 knots, and becomes limp at below 3 knots.
