Breaking news, it's official, the Battle of Britain was in 1957

Forget the History books, the BBC have rescheduled it

It took part in a memorial flight in 2007 to mark 50 years of the Battle of Britain.

I’m going to choose to assume someone forgot to add ‘Memorial Flight’ to that sentence as opposed to actually being THAT ignorant…

Then again, I almost fell out of my chair when Mathew Pinsent revealed he’d never heard of Monte Cassino, a battle his grandfather fought in. If an Eton and Oxford grad has never heard of it, perhaps we should rethink how we’re teaching history.

From personal experience, while doing some work for a Cambridge graduate who was teaching Latin and Ancient Greek,
that doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Montecassino? Isn’t he the chap who runs the local Italian restaurant or is it an online gambling site? And I don’t think that it’s on record – yet – that either was an answer given in a GCSE history examination, although it would not surprise me to learn that it is the case!

Nope – I think you’d get better odds on someone being that ignorant. We are talking BBC here, don’t forget…..;)

In discussion with one of my former employers IT ‘whizkids’, who expressed an interest in history, it turned out that he had never heard of the Bismarck and the British efforts to sink it ….
