Westland Whirlwind N60BG

While flicking through some old magazines I came across this replica.

According to the FAA is still exists, but I could only find two rather poor images on line, both taken on the ground.

Does anyone know anymore about the aircraft, other than whats on Wiki.

Whirlwind

Hmm… interesting. You’ve go to hand it to the Yanks for trying.

Is that a multiple spear gun in the nose?

I do not wish to be unkind but Replica is very pushing it more like half size loose scale is nearer the mark.

In reality it bears very little in relation to the real thing as its not true to any scale and fits in with the use of AA-1 wings as has been said.I think it used a pair of Lycoming engines but I may be wrong and thats about it .unlike the scale Mosquito that at least does try very hard to be a representation of the original in a smaller format or the scale Spitfires they do look a lot more like the original article.

I would say 3 out of ten for effort on this one being generous and -2 for accuracy.

I am not sure if it actually has flown or not I think I read or was told by someone that it was a sod to handle. Not sure if that was on the ground in the air or both.

If you’ll forgive the pun, the only apt response is…Crikey! 😉

‘Replica’ is pushing it a bit. I know the plans are still commercially available, it is from California, an it uses the wings of a Grumman AA-1A.
