Hello from a new forum member. I have enjoyed reading this forum, but now have something to ask.
I have what I believe to be the (rather battered) makers plate of the above aircraft.
It belonged to my father, who was in the SAAF during WW2.
Although he was too young to make it to front line service, he became a w.o.p. air gunner in Ansons.
I recall him showing this to me in the late sixties, and it recently came to light again.
I suspect that it was a schoolboy souvenir, as it was in a box with other school memorabilia. He lived in Cape Town.
He had two uncles who were in north Africa and Italy, both in the SAAF. His father also served in N Africa throughout the war, So it may have come from there.
My father had no involvement with aviation subsequent to his demob in 1946.
The details on the plate are as follows:
Junkers Flugzeug- und- Motorenwerke AG. Dessau
Muster: JU 88 A5
Werk-Nr: 6239
Abnahme 28.12.1940
Heinkel- Werke G.m.b.H
Oranienburg
I guess the a/c might have been made by Heinkel under licence, or modified by them perhaps?
I have done some searching on the web, without finding out any specifics, does anyone have any records which may shed some light on this aircraft’s history?
I am intending to attend the Shuttleworth engineering open day, and could bring the plate with me.
Cheers,
Charles

My pleasure & glad to help Charles. I don’t really have much of an interest in these data-plates, but we have a sub-section on the LEMB which discusses them and I’m sure the small band of members there would like to see it. Perhaps you can either post an image here or email it to me? If you click on my name above, you should have an option to email me… if not, drop me a PM here š
Cheers
Pete

Hello Peter,
Many thanks for your quick, expert reply. I live near Leatherhead, if you are interested in seeing the plate, we are not too far away. I can also photograph it and try to post the image, if you wish.
So it would seem that this somewhat grim relic was sent back to an aviation mad schoolboy in Cape Town.
Regards,
Charles

This is what we/Barry Rosch has in his “work in progress” Luftwaffe Database:
The same list includes that this example was built by Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke GmbH at Oranienburg circa Nov’40.
Hope this help,
