Late P40 Wings

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the raised feature circled in the photo below was for? I had thought it was some sort of link collector, but as you can see there are seperate link and cartridge ejector chutes further forward.

It’s a feature that only seems to appear on later P40’s (P40N’s certainly, and perhaps some M’s), and I’m wondering what it could be.

The pic below is a crop of a photo of the famous Walnut Ridge P40 disposal site.

Thanks CK, that clears that one up. Funny how you can look at something for years and not notice certain features…

The bulge is for clearance on the rear part of the gun breech/receiver. It is on all models from the P40D to P40N. There are quite a few restored P-40 aircraft with no guns installed that have had a flat gun access panel installed with no bulge.

The bulge is not as pronounced as it seems in the photo above – the oil staining probably accentuates it.
