I remember my uncle telling me about a B-17 that he said landed on top of
Warner’s Bridge having not quite made the airfield. This may well be the one you are referring to.
11th Feb 1944
B-17 231694 of 511 Sqdn Polebrook, returned from ops. over Frankfurt, with casualties on board.
Pilot was Lt. Frank Turbyne.
The aircraft over ran the runway and crashed into a defence post on the embankment of Warner’s Bridge.
The crew of eleven survived the crash and were taken to hospital. The aircraft suffered fire damage and
was a write off.
The other aircraft I was thinking of, in relation to “The War Lover” film, was actually a B-24,(578 Sqdn)
which crash landed at Southend on 20th Feb 1944. The same day that another B-24 from the same
squadron, force landed near Paglesham. Both were from the base at Wendling
