Preserved aircraft, Herat Afghanistan

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/12/world/asia/afghan-museum-recalls-a-previous-war.html

Today’s NEW YORK TIMES has an article on the Jihad Museum in Herat Afghanistan.

it wasn’t there last time I was in Herat, doing research for my book AFGHANISTAN: GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES, which Ms. Amazon will happily sell you on her website.

A photograph shows a Mi-24 Hind-D in good shape. The report also states that a “MiG” is on exhibit (probably one of several MiG-21s that used to be at Shindand).

Seems worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood. When I was there, several of the surviving architectural treasures of Herat were being restored with UN funding, so see an Afghan city that once was thriving when Kabul was nowhere with camels.

No, I believe that was among the surprise findings. I believe this airplane is the one (or part of) now restored in Italy. I was not around when it was recovered, but was told that being under a larger aircraft at least protected it from the elements.

For cultural archaeology, yes. For aviation archaeology, not so much, especially after all the wrecks have been removed from Afghanistan’s airports, although there was the wonderful find of the Italian pre-war Ro 37 biplane that had been squashed UNDER a MiG-15 in the lowest level of the Kabul dump.

Is this an additional find to the 6 or so Romeos that were recovered a few years back?

re;

Afghanistan and Libya must be paradise for archeologists. Pity they are so dangerous.

The “MiG” is actually an Su-7.
The other helicopter is a Mi-17.
