Im hoping that some of the members here may be able to help – I’m looking for more images of this same a/c in this same scheme or some help from someone in the know.
She wears ex – 92 Blue Diamonds with new unit markings on her fuselage – but I can’t see the front end? I would like to know if she retained the 92 chequers for a while or if removed, what replaced them etc. Where was the serial?
Any information gratefully received.

Hi Steve, if you do manage to resize the image it would be great to see it here.
If Steve emails me it I’ll re-size and add to this if Steve hasnt already done so by then.

Hi Gary, I have a JPEG of the photo but the file size is too large to post here. I can either email it to you or at some point I can re-save it in a smaller size.
PM sent Steve

Adrian – surprised youve not seen the picture before- its been around a while – The shot is taken at RAF Binbrook on the disused runway- thats the old 5 Sqn hangar behind- the hunter has AFDS mks on i’d guess the shot is taken when 92 had given up the hunters and perhaps the AFDS were using them at Binbrook as part of CFE. I know one of the Pilots who was on AFDS at the time i’ll see if he flew this aircraft. `they had – i think hunters, meteors Javelins and Lightnings .
I think there is another picture on air britain of a Hunter with Yellow markings on it parked on the same spot in the same weather so it may have been an air defence exe
hope this helps

I have a similar shot of XG185 showing that it also had a white disc on the nose where the squadron checks had been.
Bingo – that will do for me. Is this photo in a book Steve or is it shareable?

Thanks for IDing the serial location Adrian – can see that now.
Another similarly marked Hunter 6 (XG189) had a circular white disc on the nose, so I’d stab a guess that this a/c did too. XG189 however appears to carry different fuselage bars so clearly nothing can be taken for granted.
This has turned out to be one very challenging research project!

A very rare and interesting Photo Gary, which I haven’t seen before. Regret I cannot shed any light on what was on the front end, but I very much doubt if 92 Squadron’s checks were retained as 92 Sqn. had re-equipped with Lightning F2s by 1964. I would guess there is some sort of DFLS insignia on the nose. As for the serial, if you look very closely in the right place you can see ‘XG185’ in very small black letters just above the end of the white stripe. This is how it was worn when with the Blue Diamonds and still wears the code ‘Z’ above the fin flash.
