Dies anyone know exactly where the Civilian Repair Organisation site was at Ilchester? Is it the same place ‘West of Yeovilton Airfield’ that was bought in 1938 by Westland? Can anyone give me a map ref as to where this is?
Thanks,
Matt

The hangar used is still in use as the hangar for 848 Squadron, as the site was absorbed by RNAS Yeovilton some time ago. There’s a picture of the inside of the hangar showing Seafires under repair in the book ‘Yeovilton’ by P. M. Rippon & Graham Mottram published by Fox & Co in 1990 with the ISBN 1 870872 02 9.

Long before I joined the Forum I remember there was a thread about these. I can’t remember if Ilchester was mentioned….

Matt, Hi,
The current ‘C’ class road that runs SE > NW across the W end of Yeovilton’s main runway from ST 53912 23022 to ST 53397 23387 shows some very slight crop/soil marks on GE that it might – at one stage – have been extended to ST 52682 23767. That is, the small area. to the W of the Roman Road not occupied by the housing development to the NNE of Ilchester. That non-housing use of that area seems odd?
Admit that this grasping at straws – but more has been divined from less in the past
