I’ve had a couple of photos for a long time but not really known anything about them. They look like Bristol Fighters and the note on the back says India 1920 and 1923. They came from my great uncle who would have been out there with the army (Royal Artillery) at that time, and I have some town names in northern India. Anything anyone could add would be great.

From a little research, I have found dozens of anomalies. But! I believe these Brisfits belonged to 5 Sqn who were patrolling the North-West Frontier of India from Apr 1920 into WWII. 20 Sqn appeared to have applied their codes on the Fin.
J6598 (C) apparently served with 5 Sqn in Jan 1924 according to Air Britian āJā Files.
The ground equipment in the first photo would have yer elf & safety guys havin kittens. 2 x oil drums for steps. Excellent!:D:D

Nice pictures! Try scanning them in grey scale rather than colour or black and white. It may give a crisper result

As far as I can tell the location is in Uttar Pradesh, must look up his military record & see what he was up to over there. Several of my family seem to have been out in India around that time.
Thanks for the comments & info – they have been gradually deteriorating over time so I needed to scan the photos in before they get worse.

Thanks for posting those Bar Side. Takes me back to the early days of Shuttleworth’s example, which wore a similar scheme.

All I can add is what lovely pictures and thanks for sharing, they are definitely Bristol Fighters.
5 & 20 squadron were in India performing Army Co-operation work with Brisfits from the early 1920s, and were later joined by 28 & 31 sqns with the type.
