Daily Express South Coast Air Race 1950

Can some kind soul please tell the the name of the pilot who won this race – that year it was from Hurn (Bournemouth) to Herne (Pier being the finishing line) – and the identity of the aeroplane that he/she was flying. I have been unable to find the information on the internet and I don’t have a copy of ‘British Racing & Record Breaking Aircraft’ (P.M.H.Lewis). If, additionally, someone can identify all the airfields to which the competitors dispersed after the finish of the race, I shall be more grateful still.

With my thanks in anticipation.

Thank you, Tim. She does look svelte, especially in that colour scheme! What is to go into the empty space behind those cowlings? A Train or a Walter Mikron?

All being well likely Train.

………..I think that the Lignel Coach must have liked this race for I think that I have a picture of it at Shoreham for the event in ’51.

A couple of snap-shots taken at Hurn the day before the race…Halifax G-AKEC and Lignel 46 F-BCZJ (a nice obscure type..ideal stuff for AA!).

Thank you, Chumpy. I knew that I’d be able to rely on you! But could you please take a further look at the book and let me know where Chilton DW.1a G-AFSV was placed in the race. As to warming up your scanner, well I understand that it is cold in the UK at present so said scanner might appreciate a little warmth. And if you do, at least you won’t need to get out the pit props to take a scan from this book!

As you mentioned Chilton ‘FSV I thought you might like to see this image of that very airframe which I took this Summer. It is owned and has been restored by Roy Nerou. I provided an item about it published in Pilot a few months back.

Thank you both, Chumpy and Snoopy. I’ll PM you with my e-mail address, Chumpy, as an aide memoire. However the hyperlinks posted by Snoopy provide the information that I require, namely that Group Captain Edward Mole flew the Chilton to 44th place in the race. So I’ll arrange for a bottle of cheap plonk to wing its way to him – at current exchange rates, just over £1 a bottle for basic Côtes du Rhône in the local E-Leclerc supermarket. I’ll exchange with him it for a response to my last e-mail!

Lists, photos, map etc. Best speed was a Hurricane at 300mph. Those woz the days…!

I at my flying club a couple of days ago, and was reminded that Membership, which was in excess of 600 around 25 years ago, is now down to just over 100. Not even enough to organise a decent p-up fer Crimble. As for prize money…lol…today, you’d be luck to get a bottle of cheap plonk…! Can I go back to 1935 please…? 🙂

The Chilton flown Gp Capt E.L. Mole is listed in the runners and riders, but no mention of how it did. Second was Nighthawk G-AGWT..Third was Hawk Trainer G-AGLK.

Quite a turn out for the race 75 entries, 67 stated, 61 finished. Total prize money was £2,350…which no doubt accouted for the many entrants!

Yes it is a bit brass monkey back in blighty, hope it is better down S.W France?

Cheers, C.

PS remind me of your email if you need a scan

..From said Putnam volume winner was Proctor G-AHUZ flown by N.W. Charlton.

There is a full list of entrants inthe book..But alas no mention of the airfields to which they dispersed to.

Do I need to warm up my scanner!!!?

Cheers, C
