Sgt Jean Mary Youle (WAAF) MM

I am trying to establish which airfield Sgt Jean Youle earned her MM during August 1940. Her citation is quite specific in detail – except, of course, the airfield.

Several online sources put it at RAF Detling on 13 August 1940, but I am none too sure.

Can anyone confirm where she won it?

As an aside

Corporal Daphne Pearsons George Cross at Detling, May 1940, was jaw dropping to say the least…..

Thank you!

I had seen that, but other things I picked up were rather contradictory. One of the MMs had been stated to have been won at Andover, but I now think both were at Detling after all.

Interesting that, if these two were won at Detling on 13 August then, in total, there were five MMs won in the face of Stuka attacks on RAF installations and one MC – all in the space of one week!

Thanks Baz!

I must contact Robin – not spoken to him in a while.

However, other sources also state that Jean Youle and a Corporal Josephine Robins both earned their MM at Detling but I think that Robins won hers at RAF Andover. I am thus doubtful about Youle.

Given that this information on Robins is incorrect, then if Youle did win hers at Detling (and I am starting to doubt this!) then who was the other WAAF? I can find no other WAAF MM candidates who we do not know about and where/how they won their awards.

Recently read about this.

2 MMs were won this day, both by WAAFs, during a raid by Stukas on Detling.
One was Sgt Jean Youle.
