Hi there,
Just wondering have any WW1 types such as the Vickers Vimy, SE5a, or Sopwith Camel etc ever been in a formation with WW2 aircraft such as the Spitfire, Mustang or WW2 bombers such as the B17 or Lancaster at any UK airshows ? Most WW1 aircraft would have to be going at full speed to keep up ? but surely its possible for some of them see the youtube clip below at the 2004 Wanaka airshow in New Zealand. WW2 types have been in duo formations with jets at the Shepway Airshow, but in this case maybe Old Warden and a few other venues ? Any info would be appreciated :-

At the opposite end of the spectrum didn’t a few WW2 fighters formate with a 747 one year at Weald? Anyone got a picture?
‘
Hampden; yeah, you’re right ol’ chap ~ It did happen, 1985’s “Fighter Meet” IIRC ?
The Boeing 747 was a serving ‘Northwest Orient’ bird at the time & again, going by (beer addled) memory, there were FIVE fighters on each wing…
I seem to remember that Northwest Orient were “the” chief sponsers that year, before the Daily Mail took over in subsequent years, then Intrepid did (finally) before closure of the event sometime in the mid 1990’s
Yes, I “do” have a picture (probably several), that’s for certain, BUT, sadly my ol’ XP Tower that my scanner/printer/copier is rigged up to has just gone ****-up….. (I’m typing this on a laptop round a relative’s house), so, sadly won’t be uploading the picture any time this side of Christmas…. (presumably & besides, my 35mm shots spanning some 30+ years are in deep-storage:(), so, sometime early next year when it’s either fixed or I’ve hitched & configured my Epson scanner up to my laptop (God forbid, it’s like hauling a caravan :D), I’ll give you a shout & forward a copy on, if yer still interested ?

And there is the story, which might apocryphal, about the flight of 3 Vimys that took off from that base in Egypt to fly to Iraq when there was an easterly wind blowing. After a couple of hours they were still flying backwards into Libya, then the wind dropped and they were able to finally fly back from whence they had taken off and land.
Peter McMillan tells a story of how when they flew the Vimy to Australia, they took off on a bad day in Italy and he saw a small red car go along the road underneath them, stop at a roadside veg stall, go in, buy his veg, come out, load the car and drive off and they never caught him.

Seconded!! I missed it at first reading…! Very funny! Perhaps it’s not original but I always remember my father telling me that at the point you heard a Vimy in the distance you could go in make a cup of tea and it wold be overhead when you went back outside to drink it.

Can’t recall which show it was for, possibly Farnborough, but the attached pic is of G-BPOB and P7350.

The closest I’ve seen was the Swordfish, Seafury, Firefly formation. Well, when I say formation the Swordfish would start at the runway end, the others in another county and they would `meet` at crowd centre!

The Vimy was not likely to formate with much due to it being one of the few aeroplanes that gets bird strikes on the trailing edge
You have been looking at KF again Melvyn

The flypast at Tommy Sopwith’s house was not in formation and consisted of (from memory) Pup (middle wallop) Hind (shuttleworth) Hurricane (BBMF) Hunter (?) and Harrier
The formation was a year or so before and was at Biggin Hill and had the Middle Wallop Pup and a Harrier in formation. The Pup pilot (whose name I forget) told me it was hard not because of speeds or downwash but because the noise of the harrier made it hard to set the correct revs on the Le Rhone which you do need to be listening to

The above clip is unreal, a Spitfire in formation with a Sopwith Camel at low level at Wanaka in 2004. I believe
Nigel Lamb is at the helm of the Spitfire incredible flying and feat
Hope you enjoy it !

I recall a pairing of Sopwith Pup and Harrier being flown past Tommy Sopwith’s house for one of his Birthdays (90th?)

I remember at a Duxford auction day, around 1989, the Patrick Lindsay Colection SE5E was paired for a flypast with the TFC Hurricane.
