Before anyone asks

Airmen of the Special Erection Party and soldiers of 2nd Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry, unpack the fuselage of a Supermarine Spitfire Mark V drawn from a crate by a Coles crane on the edge of the runway at North Front, Gibraltar. The Special Erection Party was established at Gibraltar in July 1942 to assemble and test fly aircraft crated from Britain by sea for the reinforcement of Malta. They are seen here attending to a shipment of twenty Spitfires which arrived on 29 September 1942. Although many of the aircraft were damaged in transit, the SEP, assisted by the soldiers in the non-technical work, got them ready for despatch by 11 October. This aircraft, EP286, flew with No. 1435 Squadron RAF on Malta, then with No. 208 Squadron RAF in Italy, before being transferred to the Armee de l’Air in February 1946.

Special Erection Party:D Who thought that up!

Yes Stirlings got scrapped at Woburn. You can still find small bits if you know where to look.

Apparently there were also Stirlings scrapped at Woburn Abbey ( photo on the `Airfield Exchange`)One chap I know in our village used to access them via the nose ladders. His brother removed a compass from one and still has it.

Interesting shot, reminds that there is a vertical image taken of one of the scrapping sites just NW of St Athan with a field full of Stirlings.

The Stirling photograph is at Maghaberry.
The aircraft were there for scrapping some reputedly straight off the production line. Mostly Mk IV. There are three photo’s in this series, here’s one of the others.

If you gathered up all the surviving Stirling parts would there be a realistic chance to build one? I know there is a cockpit build, some turret builds and a few other bits and bobs being made but would I get the chance to see one in my lifetime?
