…okay okay, even though the European E-3 AWACS aircraft are “merely” about 30 years old,
and the KC-135R isn’t near retirement yet, I just did not want to withhold you this clip…

After 25 seconds things get interesting, and from 0.38 onwards downright frightening… 😮

Well I’ll be jiggered!
I’m sure that I’ve read that the US payments that were (are?) being paid to Spain were enough to make a difference to the nations financial health, though not sure how true or fair that is.

Probably the most well known and worst loss was the KC-135 and B-52G off the Spanish coast in 1966.
By coincidence on the BBC news website:

In case the original clip at

Aircraft are pretty sturdy things but I’m always amazed how easy they come apart in a mid air. Something to definitely avoid!

Nearer to home of course there was the tragic loss of the Marham based Victor K.1A in 1975 after a refuelling Buccaneer accidentally struck and removed the Victor’s tailplane over the north sea. I think only the co-pilot miraculously got out of the Victor alive.

The incident I was thinking of was between a Phantom and a C130 refueling tanker….

Probably the most well known and worst loss was the KC-135 and B-52G off the Spanish coast in 1966. Seven crew members were killed but four of the B-52 crew were able to escape, the four nuclear weapons were recovered, one after a long undersea search.

The incident I was thinking of was between a Phantom and a C130 refueling tanker. The Phantom hit head on the tanker while it was tanking several other aircraft. The Phantom and the C130 crew were lost IIRC. At least one of the tanking aircraft was damaged or lost. Apprarently the Phantom made a **** up of the approach proceedure and attempted to tank in the wrong direction to the others.

Wasn’t there a Phantom Tanker mid-air during the Vietnam war?

I do know about “Pardo’s Push”… 😉
http://www.military-quotes.com/forum/pardos-push-vietnam-story-t13912.html 😎
It was March 10, 1967, in enemy skies over Hanoi.

I read about an F-4 that had a double engine failure on the boom and the KC towed it back to its base!

As the movie was taken from the tanker isn’t release of such information a breach of official secrets? Personally I wouldn’t want to end up on a charge posting such a thing on You Tube especially with all the pain that can get you into. Pretty scary though but I guess the military is a pretty scary enviroment anyway.
