B17 mid air collision.

Can anyone shed any light on a story a friend told me the other day, but he could not remember all the details.
It would seem a B17, named “ALL American” of the 414th Sqrdrn of the 97 Bomber group, collided with a German fighter.
It would seem the B17 with a considerable amount of damage, including parts of the fighter were embedded in the B17, Did it make it back to it’s home base?.
Has anyone any photographs of the damage to the B17?.

The story goes, according to Martin Caiden in his book “Flying Forts” is that the plane made it home, then broke in two after a successful landing.

In the thumbnail photo above, if you look carefully behind the waist gun position, you can see the crew members standing, ready to bail out as soon as the tail section fell away.

Incredible!

We’ve had this discussion about this aircraft on here at least twice before.

I’m not getting on you for not finding the earlier threads… the broke-d!ck search (mis)function on this board couldn’t find either thread… despite the search term

B-17 “All American”

being in the title of the first link I posted.

I had to get the links from Google!

Jim if this subject interests you get hold of Janes “Battles with the Luftwaffe”
Lots of damaged B17’s and B24’s in there along with 109’s and F/W 190’s.
The aircraft you mention is not in there though, as it about the bomber campaign against Germany.

Some extraordinary pictures on this site.

Hi Charlie, I don’t think the word, “Extraordinary” describes the photos in your Link, (Many thanks for that) If I were in a conversation with A.N. Other, and described the damage inflicted on those aircraft, I bet I would not be beleived,

Looking at some of the damage these planes suffered, I am amazed they just didn’t fall from the sky, let alone limp home, then get repaired, to fly again.
They say a picture paints a thousand words, how true.
Thanks again for the Link.

Sorry, but 4 people I knew died in a mid air a few years back and I hoped this wasn’t more bad news.

I agree with you – but seems neither the original poster nor any moderator has actioned this – so I too opened the thread fearing the worst!

Tim

I don’t know why but the worst didn’t even cross my mind. Probably because if it had been a known aircraft the poster would have referred to it….:)

Any chance we can change the title to ‘Wartime B17 mid air collision’, to stop any unnecessary worrying?
