i set the recorder for the early hours of sunday morning and watched it last night . enjoyed the aviation sequences – but oh dear – the ‘acting’ was creaky – even Kirk Douglas couldn’t save the day . (not counting Charlie the dog !)
there can’t be many films with such an anticipated and poorly managed final scene when the ‘aged’ Farentino/Ross reveal themselves . who was responsible for their make-up ?
and the 1941 invasion fleet still got through !

Apparently in a multi engine airplane (such as an F14) with an inoperative engine, the centered ball is no longer the indicator of zero sideslip due to asymmetrical thrust. The yaw string is the only flight instrument that will directly tell the pilot the flight conditions for zero sideslip.
So there you go 🙂

… and did you notice the the yaw indicator on the F-14 ???
Just before the order is given to ‘Splash the Zeros’.
A piece of string on the anti-glare panel in front of the windscreen 😮
Probably aviation quality string though…….

Those things aside, it’s a film I always enjoy watching.
One of those “what if” films.
My favourite scene is where the two F-14s fly low over the boat, then go into a climb.
