Hi all,
Wondering if anybody can help.
Am trying to trace what the single fuselage code letter might have been on a 65 Sq Spitfire in September of 1942.
I know the other 2 were YT.
Spitfire was AR403.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Drem.

Edgar,
Thanks for the offer but both Drem and myself have a copy of the 65 Squadron ORB.
And of course thanks for the correction I read my dates wrong once more.

According to “Spitfire the History,” AR403 was with 165 Squadron from August 9th. to September 23rd., when it went to 65, finally being destroyed 16-1-43. Whether the codes were recorded always depends on the diligence of the I.O. involved, but “Fighter Squadrons of the RAF & their aircraft,” by John Rawlings, does list some code/serial combinations, so there is a chance.
I visit Kew, regularly, but not before Saturday week; if you can wait (at least) that long, I don’t mind having a look in 65’s ORB during the 45 minutes, or so, that I have to wait for my files to appear.

According to other sources AR403 left 165 Squadron in August 1942.
AR403 was with 65 Squadron from September 1942.
I dont know if you will ever find the individual code letter.
Unless you can find a photo somewhere of AR403 or it is recorded in records somewhere.

You can download the Form 541 from the ORB for that month from the National Archives and see if it is entered there. It will cost £3.50. Another £3.50 if you want the Form 540.
