Very nice display to round of the Shuttleworth year yesterday.
Making a very welcome return was Roger Hoefling as commentator.
His dry wit and to the point commentary takes me back to the shows of the 70’s and 80’s. Not to mention the Mildenhall Air Fete.
Hope you stay on Roger!

Couldn’t agree more. He’s the only commentator thats made me want to stand closer to the loud speakers so I can hear him better. The content of his commentaries, his style of delivery, and ineed the sound of his voice, makes him the perfect commentator for Old Warden. I too hope we see and hear much more of him.

Yep…. it was a good end-of season show – even if the weather was bl**dy terrible at 8.30am!
Good to see – and chat – with a number from here in between flogging books!
Here endeth the end of our 27th year of trading at OW!

I also enjoyed the commentary (sorry, Oxcart!), particularly as he said very little while the aircraft were in front of the crowdline, and mostly let them speak for themselves (I believe other people have spluttered in the past about commentators not doing that :diablo:). He did use some very long words, and got in a nice ad-lib when a rather different formation came across that was RSPB rather than RAF.
It was really nice to see some different things flying (even if I do enjoy the barnstorming!), and the Slingsby Petrel was as wonderful flying as it is beautiful to look at – a real joy to see. On the other hand, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything that could cure constipation faster than the EoN primary glider. I haven’t seen a Storch in the air since Duxford September 1982 – thank you, Hairyplane! – and I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen Gnats displaying since the Reds at the Essex Show – which gives you an idea of how long ago it must have been. I had a picture of a red Comper swift on my wall as a child (our bedroom was decorated with a set of uncut sheets of illustrations from an Ian Allen book, title I never knew, would love to find it but trying to ID an Ian Allan book from the three photos you can remember is, I suspect, a mugs game), and saw one fly for the first time as well. To top it all off, the weather was beautiful too.
I’ve never yet been disappointed at Old Warden. Long may that continue.
Adrian
ETA – I’d have been happy to pay the price and drive the distance just to see the Edwardians in the air – they are wonderful. Everything else was a bonus.

Thirded. Only my second Shuttleworth visit, and this time it really did live up to the visions I had of a glorious evening with rotary engined types pottering round the circuit in soft golden light! Really nice mix of types too, and after Flying Legeds the commentary was like a breath of fresh air.

I agree absolutely…it was like a time warp with those authoritative tones, and considered pauses. A master at work!
I fondly remember the time that Neil Williams landed short in the cornfield after an abbreviated circuit in the Bleriot, and Roger had organised a whip round for repairs before Neil had got back to the airfield.
And some great jet flying too, pity the Sabre is still U/S though. Here’s to the next season.
Thanks to all at Old Warden for some great moments this year, not forgetting the sad ones too.

Well, I agree about the display
