I can honestly say that in my time spotting that I never thought I would see a Canadair water bomber, let alone at an airfield where I work!
Two CL-215s of Buffalo Airways (TV Ice Pilots etc) are the first arrivals for Cardiff Aviation Ltd, headed by Bruce Dickinson, at St Athan, where they will be in off season care & maintenance. There are some great plans for them while here as well.
I couldn’t believe how big and chunky these beasts are!

I had a look around a turbine powered version of one of these at MAN a few years ago, They are, er…….”Special looking” as my mum said about me once!
Rgds Cking
Found this link on another forum, they’ve got the wrong engines but the flying looks pretty interesting.
Saw a couple of Hellenic Air Force CL-415s at Preveza last month,
Precisely… the CL-415 is the turboprop update of the CL-215 design.
125 CL-215s were built 1969-90, and while a turboprop modernization/conversion is offered for these, all new construction of turboprop versions are the CL-415, which has 10% more payload capacity.
76 CL-415s had been built from 1993 through March 2011.

Rafmatt, PistonRob,
I thought by then they had just about stopped you spraying stuff, I know they used to roller the Tens when I left in 89, any resprays went to Luton I think at the time..
officially yes but there was alot of spray lancing of paint stripper on a VC10 going on whilst i was in n out of the hangers. i did see them in primer but never actualy seen the spraying going on whilst i was there except for the 2 Sea kings i did.. a few half primed/painted Phantoms and Tornados F2/3 were kicking around. it was about this time the pin holes for a load of the Swing wings on Tornados were screwed up by Marshalls.. there was also a row of Canberra and Argosy aircraft in various states of repair and strip down. legend has it that i think 5 Canberras were sold for £1 a piece to the scrap man 😮

Good pics, Pagen01. Was just watching 282, on an Ice Pilots episode (last season? current season?), give Scott Blue his initiation to waterbombing.

It’s great to see them there but why do they fly them all the way from Canada to Wales for maintenance when they could get it done in Canada?
As seen on an episode of Ice Pilots. Off to Turkey.

Don’t suppose these will be outside over winter will they??? Have a wedding in Wales in December and would be nice to see these on the way?
They will be hangared in CALs’ Twin Peaks, you never know though, you may catch them on a test flight or something
Yes the Army are still in West Camp, now Churchill Lines, more so than ever.

Yes, get your priorities right, planes first, weddings second!
‘Propliner’ report that the Canadairs were on a four month contract for Turkey and then would return to Canada, maybe plans have changed.

Alan, posts #1 & 8 should explain it, Buffalo Airways of Canada owned, leased to Turkey, remaining in Europe (Saints) for off season care and ready for deployment next hot season.
Rochford, Yes I agree, I was misled somewhere. After I posted it dawned on me that it couldn’t be the same aircraft inolved.
By: AlanR - 7th October 2012 at 08:50
Nice photographs.
I’m a little confused though (it doesn’t take much 🙂 )
Who do these planes belong to ?, as they still have Canadian registrations.

These CL215 crossed the pond last March & are not related to the gear-up aircraft. They worked in Turkey & tried to work in Albania (but there is no avgas in Albania).
