Spitfires on Salisbury Plain

I do not know if this comes under the myth or I have heard that somewhere before.

But one of our guys was saying he recalled recently reading in a magazine about the remains of Two Spitfires found on a remote part of Salisbury Plain.

Apparently from what he said the wrecks where in a very poor state and burnt and the article said that it was being planned to use helicopters to remove them.

I do not recall seeing anything mentioned here and I have done a search and got nothing can anyone confirm or elaborate on these supposed two wartime wrecks that have remained undiscovered for so long ??.

I think In would be right in saying that there were the last survivors of the types in the UK? Of course several Battles were imported in the 70’s along with Bollingbrokes but apart from the Finnish one the Blenheim is extinct. I assume they were considered too far gone for the embryo RAFM????

Whilst rummaging through a box of old photos ..looking for something else!

Came across these two, Battle and Blenheim remains on Salisbury Plain (many years ago), both photos taken by the late Peter Foote.

I acquired from the late Peter Foote (c.1974) one of the main gear legs and a shrapnel-pocked wheel from one of these aircraft. I believe he was the first enthusiast to visit the site, probably late 1960s or early 70s.

His visits commenced in October 1966.

The oleo and wheel are now safely back re-united with the PK519 project.

“Remnants are worth tens of thousands of pounds”.

😮 Really? Either there’s more parts / wreckage there than the photos show or someone’s ‘very slightly’ exagerating the true value.

The late Peter Foote dug that one. Not much left, only labels!

There is also an article about shooting down some German Ace and that mentions a Spit going in on the edge of RAF Upavon, was that ever recovered?

So when both are recovered do we have 1 with robust provenance and the other with an ‘evil’ twin?

These would be the Spitfires that were seriously shredded by Hunter cannon fire in a well known film?

That was the first thing I thought of, too!
