Anyone know more about this Canberra photo?

Inspired by DCW’s long running and excellent series “50s/60s archive” of restored b&ws, on another aviation forum’s nostalgia section (linked from http://www.nwan.co.uk) I have been posting cleaned-up b&ws mostly from 60s and 70s, collected in the mid 80s. Captioning the photos has turned up a number that are now preserved etc. Certainly surprised what a difference a little digital ‘massaging’ can make to a very ordinary print, making it worthy of presentation to a new audience.

Inevitably the very poorest photo, blotchy, pale grey and out of focus – one that does not deserve to have survived, is the one that poses the greatest ‘what, where, why, when’ questions. A rare shot, clearly a force-landing by a Canberra, the photo is notated “Taken by Peter Edwards in a field of Bees Seeds near Queensferry.” Fairly certain that this is the River Dee, Welsh/English border Queensferry. I vaguely recall that seed growers ‘Bees Seeds Ltd’ were on the Wirral side, between Chester and RAF Sealand.

So the question is, can anyone supply details and circumstances leading to this photo. Clearly in winter, presumably 50s, as after that it should have been documented by Liverpool based enthusiasts. Over to you.

Can you give me a steer to find DCW’s 50/60s achive? You mentioned another aviation forum but I can’t find it on any of the links you mentioned

This might help,
http://forum.keypublishing.com/search.php?searchid=4615595
If not, enter ‘1950’s / 1960’s archive part ??:’ in the Historic Aviation search box.

Viscount, no worries about the info, just quoting from the most comprehensive Canberra book, thanks for your PM and link to the other site.

Slightly different to Pagen01, from Colin Cummings aircraft losses series ‘Last Take-off’ (ISBN 0-9526619-3-4)
“08 Apr 1952, WD985 Canberra B2, Unit 4 Ferry Pool, nil casualties. The pilot was making his first solo on type and was assisted by another pilot undertaking his first flight in the type! After 6 minutes airborne, the aircraft rejoined the circuit and the pilot began his downwind checks with the second pilot reading from the Pilots Notes checklist. The second pilot incorrectly operated the fuel switches during a fuel check and turned off the low pressure fuel cocks and pump switches in error. The Captain then carried out a forced landing in a field near RAF Sealand”.

Thank you ‘Pagen 01’, the location certainly seems to fit, as does the time of year (well more early spring than winter).

Thank you for a fast response and the interesting detail.

One incident mentioned in English Electric Canberra (Ken Delve) is “WD985 On charge to 12 sqn 7.4.52, fuel switched off in error and belly landed near Sealand 8.4.52 whilst on delivery by 4 Ferry Pool crew!”
I wonder if that is the incident pictured, the early black & light grey scheme would seem to fit.
