Does anyone have any 7/8" 22g or 2.5" 17g seamless steel tube available ?

I am looking for some seamless “CDS” steel tube, that can be re-profiled to the correct A & P sections for the U/C legs, & the trailing edge tubes for my Snipe, & would like to know if any one has anything suitable that is spare to their own needs ?.

The sizes I am looking for are 7/16″ 22g CDS “mild steel or T64 spec”. & 2.5″ 17g T45(actual tube size needed is 2.486″, but have been told that 2.5″ will do).

I have already tried quite a few tube suppliers, with little or no luck so far.

Any leads would be gratefuly received.

Hi Bruce

There would not be any problems using 16g instead of 17g, it’s only a matter of historical accuracy.
If I can’t obtain the correct gauge, then I will use 16g, but it will still be re-profiled to the correct aerofoil section.

Can you not either:

Alter the end fittings to fit, or

Machine out the end of the tubes, with a reducing taper, to accomodate originals?

Hello Bob, where can you get the 2.5″ by 16swg from, we needed some for the Comet u/c legs and couldnt get any so settled for 4130 which was only available in .120″ wall which we had to have specialy machined down to the correct thickness.
I dont think you will find it in 17swg as they havent made tubes in the odd number sizes for a very long time. Would it matter slightly thicker as the 16swg is only .006″ thicker.
Ken

Hi Ken

The 2.5″ 16g tube would be supplied by Retrotech, if I can’t obtain any in 17g . I could have it re-drawn down to the correct gauge, but as I only need about 15′, it would be prohibitively expensive.
17g is still made, but only in a few sizes.
Any chance of you putting some photo’s of your Comet project on this forum ?.

The people at Smiths metal centres are very good to deal with:

There are quite a few other stockholders:

Hope that’s of use.

Bob,
When I have been after steel tubing for the Typhoon structure I found this place in Derby could supply almost any size I wanted (up to 3″ for the main spars). They were very reasonable priced but weren’t aircraft grade….give them a go if you are stuck

I think that nick used an available 4130 aerofoil section tube for his U/C, rather than the original section. I think he also used some kind of hydraulic tubing for the trailing edge.

It is proving to be quite a problem, especially as most manufacturers now only seem to make metric sized tube.
I can get away with commercial grade seamless tube for making the trailing edge section, but will need to find something better for the U/C tube. If I can’t find any 2.5″ in 17g then I will be forced to use 16g instead.
