Aviation in the East Midlands

I’ve just come back from Ripley, Derbyshire where just before lunchtime a tree was planted by Dr Mary Stopes-Roe (Barnes Wallis’ daughter) commemorating 125 years since Barnes Wallis was born in the town.

Organised by the Barnes Wallis Memorial Trust this event is being followed by a series of Anniversary Lectures in the town; and with some talks tomorrow morning to local school children. The event was covered by BBC East Midlands Today and hopefully I will be able to post some links later.

On my return home I saw that the Halam Lancaster Memorial in Nottinghamshire, which is located close to the crash site of 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) Lancaster ED823, was also being featured by BBC East Midlands Today. The piece featured Bomber Command veteran Jim Flint – as with the Ripley item I hope to be able to provide links later on.

Excellent!

Talking of Barnes Wallis – Still a very small number of free tickets left for Building the Bouncing Bomb talk http://www.gravityfields.co.uk/event/dambusters-engineering-bouncing-bomb … by Hilary Costello – but you’ll have to be quick!

Thanks jr the BBC EMT link to the Halam memorial is also now online, although I’m not sure that it’s working 100% yet http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-19730478 🙂

I’ll keep a look out for the Barnes Wallis link as well!
