Midland Air Museum,23/9/2012

Following on from our trip to Airbase to see the Shackleton, we used the Sunday for a trip to Midland Air Museum. It’s a nice little museum, with a surprising amount to see and access to Vulcan, Argosy and Hind when we visited. Shame the weather was poor, but you can’t have everything. Anyway…

Despite the Phantom, Vampire and Sabre in the graveyard well worth a visit.

A very nice collection, but the P.111A really should be at Cosford. I know this has been said before, but it can only continue to suffer outside and in my opinion is deserving of a better fate. Does the museum at least have plans to get it under cover?

Seconded……………

…..
The storage area holds the rear fuselage and complete tail unit of a camouflaged RCAF Sabre (23140 if I recall correctly) This was moved to Baginton upon disposal by the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield decades ago. When at Cranfield it was always hangared and the artefact appeared back then to be in good condition. I have some b&w shots I took of it in the College but as my scanner is presently off-line can’t share those at present. …..

See the following link where it is included in some colour shots.

Very unhappy, I understand. The deal was agreed sight unseen allegedly, and the aircraft arrived looking good on the outside and awful otherwise. I believe the wings were not from the same model of Sabre, and there was a serious consideration to not even putting the aircraft on display, as the rest of the aircraft in AAM were restored/conserved to a good standard.

Actually I didn’t know you had two Sabre’s, complete and incomplete. I assumed the one that was referred to in the storage must be the ex Duxford one. Why did Duxford let it go? I seem to vaguely recall reading somewhere that Duxford weren’t happy with it.

What’s the story behind the Sabre at MAM?

I guess you’re referring to the incomplete Canadair Sabre Mk.V shown (just visible behind the Vampire T.11) in the photo above of the storage area, rather than the ex Duxford Sabre which is fully assembled and displayed.

The storage area holds the rear fuselage and complete tail unit of a camouflaged RCAF Sabre (23140 if I recall correctly) This was moved to Baginton upon disposal by the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield decades ago. I have some b&w shots I took of it in the College but as my scanner is presently off-line can’t share those at present. I have found a shot someone has taken at at the MAM and shown on the following site:
http://www.eurodemobbed.org.uk/gallery_image.php?s=e&otype=1830&types=937,1534,1830,1831&aircraft=29232

(To avoid any further confusion I should perhaps mention that at one time the College at Cranfield had a complete silver RCAF Sabre 23219 but that got scrapped there.)

Impressed with the Viscount! Was lying sadly on the ground with wings next to it last time I visited, so they’ve worked hard on that! Great stuff.
I too like Midland Air Museum a lot- the open cockpit policy (Vulcan/Argosy/Viscount open for no extra fee) is great.

I think that was installed to cause water to drip down and not run underneath consequently staining the lower skin.. Seen it done on airframes outdoors using caulking etc..

Is it me, or is there a ridge running around the Vulcan nose (& tail?), at the paint demarcation line?

I wonder if they will inherit the Nimrod when Airbase and Air Atlantique engineering leave next year and the hangars shut.
