Greenham Mystery

Hello.

This is my first foray into the wonderful Historic Aviation part of this forum, and I greet you enthusiastically.

A friend of mine was wandering around the old Greenham Common airbase and took a picture of this object:

What is it? It looks like some sort of training device, but almost more nautical than aviation in nature?

I would be very happy for any thoughts you may have:)

I have a different viewpoint on what this is.

Not sure what it started life as – drop tank or whatever, but surely if you are towing this behind something, you would’t want the drag of that handling ring.

No – I think this is a cobbled together training aid for the troops to pick up and run with – anyone ex British Forces / RAF out there done the ‘stretcher run’ with several full jerry cans on it, or the pine-pole run ?

It would always be a pleasure to help those of other persuasions!

Just be warned; humour tolerance here is low! 🙂

Lots of people with a sense of humour failure on this forum of late, it seems.

Best ignore the sniffy comments….

MrMalaya – I am certain this is a paravane but as to how it got there, I have a strong idea that the Peace Camp ‘ladies’ had lots of looky-likey ‘bombs’ in their camp at one time. In fact, I’m certain they did. So, maybe how it got there?

I was going to make another pun. Best not. It will invoke another round of hissy fits!

PS – as MoggyC pointed out, I did identify what it was quite early on. Churlish of me to do so in a flippant manner. Suitably chastened. Note to self; be serious at all times.

Given it’s shape and location it could, (ironically, given some of the comments,) be someone’s idea of a joke….

If you took the trouble to read before you posted your diatribe (Fourth contribution in all the ‘great deal of time’ ) you will notice that Tangmere had a little fun and then answered the question in his next post. Levelling a charge of ‘not knowing’ therefore seems more than a little hard to fathom.

I used to spend a great deal of time on this forum and now I can see why I don’t any more. Grow up guys and try if you can to answer the mans question, I suspect the reason for the childish babble is that you dont know,

I sometimes wonder

I agree, why ask a constructive question if all you get back is a load of immature crap from a bunch of don’t knows, I used to spend a great deal of time on this forum and now I can see why I don’t any more. Grow up guys and try if you can to answer the mans question, I suspect the reason for the childish babble is that you dont know, which only goes to highlight your ignorance.

And I am sure the OP is not miffed by the banter 🙂

I’m pretty sure it is a nautical minesweeping torpedo (or whatever the correct term is). I believe it is towed on the end of a long line and somehow strings the line out at an angle from the ship to snag any mines in the swept area.
