Hi everyone
As I mentioned on Cees’ Halifax pilot’s seat thread a few days back, I’m building Revell’s new Halifax kit as DT675 of 408 Sqn in February 1943. The kit includes what looks like an American Norden bomb sight, but would this be correct for an early 1943 Halifax?
I’ve found references to Halifaxes using the British Mk. IX or Mk. XIV bomb sight, so which would be correct for a Halifax of this period?
Regards

This should help…

And the answer to post #18 is still “not sure, need to do more research”!

Another question about the Mk. XIV – does anyone know the dimensions of the sight’s Computor box:

Liberator VI bombsights?
Air Ministry
Did you manage to find out what bomb-sights were fitted to Liberator VIs, in the late 1944/early 1945 period? I’m doing a model of one from 159 Sqn now, so wondered if you had anything?

Thanks for that. It’s much smaller than I’d thought! I think I’ve made mine about 25% too big…
At the risk of pushing my luck, can you measure the diameter of the large dial with the compass markings at the rear?

Thanks again

The MkIX measures about 22 inches overall. I’ve got the museum’s one sitting next to me!

I’m not sure if anyone can answer this, but does anyone know the overall length of a Mk.IX bombsight?
I’ve scratch-built one, but I think it’s a bit too big for 1/72…

That’s an Automatic Bombsight Mk. II (not to be confused with the S.A.B.S.).
Used by a few Lancaster, Manchester and Hampden Squadrons in 5 Group but superceded by the Mk. XIV (some units may have gone back to the Mk. IX before getting the Mk. XIV).
Not popular with Bomber Command but actually said to have produced good results.
Got one out in the garage somewhere! 🙂

Any ideas what kind of sight this is fitted to a Lancaster? Not one i’m familiar with.

Early Liberators supplied to the R.A.F. had the Sperry Bombsight, but I’m not sure about later ones. They certainly didn’t have the Norden.
I believe the Sperry sight may have been replaced by the British Mk. IX C.S.B.S. due to the nature of operations (i.e. by night), which didn’t suit the American sight.
Later Liberators may have been adapted for the Mk. XIV/XIVA (or T.1/T.1a), or may have had to make-do with the Mk. IX C.S.B.S. after Sperry production ended, but I need to do more research on this.

RAF Liberator B VI bomb sights
As a slight thread drift, would the the Liberator B VI’s as used by 205 Group and in the Far East have had the Norden bomb sight?

The Mk II had the bomb steering indicator fitted in the instrument panel. The Mk III did not.
