Hello,
Don’t know if anyone can help with this request?
I am having a scale model built in wood of a Hampden from 144 Sqn, specifically AD761. This ac was shot down on Ops on 16/17 Apr 1941 just after leaving Hemswell and sadly 3 of the 4 crew were killed. However, luckily my Father, flying as the Wop AG survived, baling out very low.
My request is whether anyone has the infomation available on the ac identification letter for this ac? I know that the 2 letter wartime prefix was PL but cannot find the other letter (This is to make the model as perfect as possible for his grandson, my son, to have along with all his medals etc)
It is not mentioned in the Log Book or Harry Molyes book on the Hampden but there is a photo “somewhere” of 3 Hampdens in formation with AD761 being one of them?
Just putting this out in a forum where the amount of knowledge is awesome and also the work NICEAIRPLANES put into the models would just finish it off well.
Thanks in anticipation

Hi Seababa,
If your dad did not note the aircraft letter in his logbook it will by very difficult to find unless you come accross a photograph of that Hampden. Did you try the sqn’s Operations Record Book for the period in question (all available on line now fm The National Archive)? Mind you, no guarantee that this will mention the individual aircraft letters of their Hampdens. The RAFM in Hendon (Dept of Research and Information Services, aka DoRIS) probably hold the aircraft loss card but I don’t know if these cards also mention the aircraft letter. Worth the try though as the people at DoRIS are most helpful.
Alternatively I suggest you also post your request on the RAFCommands.com forum as some of the chaps or ladies there may be able to help you further.
Best of luck,
Walter

Bump 🙂
Last call before the model gets varnished (well, 5 weeks)!
Anyone got any ideas I can explore on this?
