Damm, was hoping to see some 1940 footage, not more from “that” movie

At one of the Great Warbirds Airdisplays they got this same effect by firing fireworks into the sky shortly before the aircraft arrived. Left the same little black puffs.
Always wondered how things like that were done!

A little aside to the hangar explosion conversation, was it a genuine hangar that was blown up in Octopussy?
No. The hangar featured in Octopussy, at least for the internal shots, was at RAF Northolt, and it was still there in 1984 when I went on ATC Summer Camp. A quick look on Google Earth show’s it’s not there any more, as is the patch of grass we camped on. All built on now!

At around the 2.24 min mark you can see flak bursting in the sky, were they using live rounds for this effect?

Yes you can see the fuel spray out before it ignites.
I always wondered why water came out of the door. So, it was fuel.

It looks more real that the real hangar at Duxford blowing up, but I suspect it has to be a model?

Chris, have you got a copy of the DVD?

Hangar explosions two separate days, aerial footage of airfield attack then shot on subsequent Sunday. From an action pov no need for full destruction of Hangar. Possibly structurally unsound after failed session so what would you do? Failed rebuild not really cricket old boy.
All history really. Given Pinewood studios thirst for action sequences DX got off pretty lightly really.

I thought the hangar explosion was a composite of both explosions. Both are shown on the Alan Tomkins footage.

I have to agree Hampden, that shot looks so model-like it really wasn’t worth the destruction of the real thing! According to Leonard Moseley’s book about the film, the explosives failed to detonate properly at the first attempt (hence that bit where Kenneth More ducks and only a bit of the door falls off). The explosives experts then went back in and re-set everything, and the full explosion was filmed on a second take.

I have to agree to. I have always felt that the hangar sequence looked as if it had come straight from a Gerry Anderson production! Not really worth the destruction of a perfectly good hangar! Still, was anyone else that bothered about it at the time?
Regards;
Steve

What’s funny is that I always thought the hanger getting blown up was a model. Did they shoot it in slow mo? The way the tree sways doesn’t look real. I was quite surprised when told it was the actual hanger!

There’s some footage that was shot by Alan Tomkins that’s done the rounds. I don’t think these clips were taken from the DVD of that footage.

Eh……..don’t want to dampen all the enthusiasm here – but us regulars have thoroughly discussed this footage before:rolleyes:
And continue to enjoy it now! You might need to add a few posts to your total of 86 to be viewed as a ‘regular’, lol 😀
Welcome to the forum 🙂

Was The Eagle pub, Cambridge featured in the film The Battle of Britain?
