Hi Stan

Can help with GIpsy Major bits if you need them?

Did you find that Auster oil tank that Damon mentioned?

Cheers
Anthony

Port wing, tailplane, rudder, engine bearers and of course engine, prop, Sutton harness, instruments and lots of Spruce, Ply and glue.
This is at present a “wishlist ” to ascertain if there are enough bits and pieces (mainly metalwork and bracketry) to think of a “composite reproduction” or whatever label some wish to pin on such a “creation”. All I want is a flying Maggie to go with the Messenger and Gemini, both of which are slowly progressing, and as a stablemate to the Minor and Tiger.

………..so it sounds as if there may not be a great deal of this old girl left in Stan Smith’s attic!

Would that be c/n 332, ex G-AETL/ZK-AEY/NZ586 and latterly ZK-ALO? Can you relate anything of it’s post-war history as my books are silent on this?

Miles M.14 Hawk Trainer III c/n 332
G-AETL 23Jul37 Phillips & Powis Aircraft Ltd., Woodley
S.Abd NZ Government, and given to Otago AC, Dunedin, as part of the government gift aircraft scheme to upgrade club pilots in preparation for military service. In use there from 2Oct37.
To RNZAF 26Sep39 as NZ596, operated initially at New Plymouth later Ashburton.
Sold ex-Woodbourne 1946 back to Otago AC and after overhaul by DHNZ at Rogotai became ZK-ALO in December 1946.
Sold to F A Patterson, Waipawa, May 1950, who flew 84hrs in it – not a bad effort for two years ownership.
Sold to Piako AC, Waharoa, 29May52.
W/off after heavy landing Waharoa 16Dec56 & DBR after hangar collapsed on damaged a/c. On scrapheap 1956-66. To MoTAT 1966, for parts to to restore ZK-AYW (M.14A c/n 779 ex L8353 G-AMMC).

I still wonder why they represented the composite rebuild as ZK-AYW rather than the far more historic ZK-ALO.

Maggie Mae.

What do you need…..or should that be, – what do you have..? :p I may know where there are some Maggie u/c parts.
-Forks;- Almost certainly Maggie, but I’d need the part no’s to confirm.
-The legs;- Again, I’d need the Maggie Drg No. for the legs, as there were a range of the Airdraulic legs for various a/c.

I should have looked at the internet as well as my books. If so I would have looked at http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac2/NZAM/ZK-ALO.html, which on the subject says:

“It was one of the two impressed into the RNZAF, and became NZ586. It returned to the Otago Aero Club in 1946. ZK-ALO was damaged beyond repair in an accident at Waharoa in 1956 whilst on the strength of the Piako Aero and was withdrawn from use. It was then totally written off when a gale collapsed the hangar that the aircraft was being stored in. Its remains were presented to MOTAT in 1966 to used to assist in the restoration of ZK-AYW”.
