Hi all,
Does anybody have any info on these two recovered engines,

Hercules ? ?

Early Merlin ?
The museum has no details on show

Wellington X LN553 would make sense since it crashed nearby and an engine was recovered:

The Hercules is almost certainly from LN553, I have a comment about it being on display in a museum in Kidwelly, apparently recovered in 1995/6.

Sorry CD – you are right. Merlin engined Lancs only used metal blades – Hercules engined Lancs used wooden blades :p

I thought Lancaster II had wooden blades?

Could it be from Wellington LN553 of 1 AGS recovered from Pembrey marshes in the 80’s or 90’s?
Could be totally wrong π

Tim

Lancs never used wooden blades

Yes, but I think Lancaster II had the same ROTOL variable-pitch setup.
More likely Wellington; if we knew roughly where it was recovered maybe any Lancaster II could be ruled-out.

Wellington I think – that looks like an electric Rotol hub and it has wooden blades.

…where’s Merlin Pete when you need him?
Duxford…..Flying Legends! π (Although I hope heβs made it to the pub by now!)
I think the Hercules has to be from a Wellington or a Lancaster.

Thank you all,
Just what I had hoped, the Hercules did look like it was a sea recovery, very corroded.
I will forward any info to the museum.

The Merlin is from Hurricane V6958 which came down near Kidwelly in 1941. It was dug up by a farmer doing ditching work and the remains abandoned against a hedge. Abergavenny ATC recovered the substantial remains from the hedge a year or two later, and found the maker’s plate still riveted to the structure, identifying the plane. The engine went to 2478 Sqn ATC museum and when that was disbanded about 15 years ago was rescued and put on display at Kidwelly. I used to clean that engine as a cadet! No idea on the second engine, but likely a sea recovery as the guy who rescued the Merlin is a keen diver. He also organised the recent memorial to the Blenheim crew lost at Cwmavon.

Bristol Hercules Sleeve valve engine first one
Has someone made a plaster front for it? or corrosion. could be a sea recovery

It’s definately an early Merlin; (one piece head and banks) I’m sure racer2 knows that, probably wants to know what A/C.
Haven’t seen one without the coolant rail along the side of the block; where’s Merlin Pete when you need him?

Um…
The first is probably Herc.
The second one looks like an Allison, sans the reduction gear and front pair of cylinders.
:p
