When I collected T.8 Tutor G-ALPU recently, it came with a spare (sadly broken in two) rudder. Tonight I noticed there was something painted underneath the top layer of paint. Anyway, a bit of scraping later I have found this.
So who or what was Clevelands?

Perhaps the rudder is not the original from the glider
It isnt 🙂
The original is still fitted to LPU. This is just a spare one that happened to come with the project when I collected it.

Gents
An appology – I did not have my glasses on and read the information from the wrong line on my database.
I am confused as to why the glider has a rudder with Clevelands on as the history I have for LPU is as ‘Viscout’ quotes.
Perhaps the rudder is not the original from the glider and fitted at a later stage in its life as the Cleveland club did have Tutor RAFGSA 160 which was written off 4/61. Somewher I have a photo of this glider which I must did out to look at the colour scheme.

I have been involved with both of these gliders The first (RAFGSA258) me and Bill Fern recovered from Bidford gliding club back in 1996. The second machine BGA.473 was stored at Melton Mowbray for about twenty years after being rescued from the close down of RAE Bedford.

WB981,
Just to confuse further, according to the 1980 reference book I have open infront of me RAFGSA.258 was formerly BGA.427, G-ALTY, BGA.427 C/no.510, crashed 28.4.57 and rebuilt as RAFGSA.258. While G-ALTU formerly/subsequently BGA.657, Co A expired 1.54.
As far as I can put together, Jon H’s glider’s history:
BGA.473 Slingsby T.8 Tutor, C/no MHL/RT.12 (MHL denoting built by sub-contractor Martin Hearn Ltd). First C of A/Permit issued 10.47. Class ‘A’ regn G-ALPU 5.49 regd to The College of Aeronautics, Cranfield. Class ‘A’ regn marks cancelled 2.63, reverted to BGA.473. C of A expired 12.67, subsequently stored at Twinwood Farm (north of Bedford). (from P.H.Butler ‘British Gliders’, 3rd ed, 1980, MAS, along with G-INFO site). Anyone add to this outline history?

Did you mean G-ALTU WB981? Just checking as this one is G-ALPU.
So collating the several replies, are we in agreement then that this logo relates to the now defunct Clevelands GC? Also if it does is there any more detail to it that I shoudl go looking for?
I had initially ruled out an RAF connection based on the fact the base colour was blue (with yellow detailing) rather than the more traditional colours (silver, red, white etc), but just goes to show you 🙂
As for which glider it may have been fitted certainly doesnt look like LPU as history doesnt match plus has a rudder fitted already. I have found some Slingsby numbers and dataplates but they are most likely just part numbers. The only other way I can think of bottoming this out is to try and identify a ex Clevelands machine that had at least the rudder painted canary yellow in later life. Hmmm….thats sounds easier said than done though…..

I’m surprised to see it say ‘Clevelands’ G-ALTU was at some stage in its life RAFGSA 258 which spent some of its life with Fenland GC RAFGSA.

Saw on e-Goat that Clevelands was closed by the OIC as the balance of service members to civil fell below the 51% required.

My father flew a Tutor with the Clevelands Gliding Club at RAF Leeming 1958-61. I remember seeing the fuselage badly damaged after spinning in off a winch launch (do not know what happened to the pilot) perhaps this came off the remains.
