Does anyone know where Peter Twiss’ memorabila ended up? I’m particularly interested in tracking down his logbooks. I have contacted the auctioneers, but I doubt if they will tell me, but they might contact the owner and give them my contact details. Did any of these items end up with the FAA Museum?

TIA,

Ian

No, they didn’t, sadly. He had always intended that they (or certainly a copy of them) be lodged with the FAAM Records and Research Library once he’d gone but despite the Museum’s best efforts they have clearly gone elsewhere. They would very much like to see them (as would I – especially his wartime FAA entries and those for his involvement flying Swordfish G-AJVH, including filming of “Sink the Bismarck!”), so if anyone has any leads…..!

My understanding is that the family have authorised this sale because of all the usual reasons that occur when there are so many items to be dealt with.

There is interest from the FAA and who knows what that will bring.

The collection itself is varied and very interesting, and is to be sold under many lot numbers, so there are items available for all budgets.

Always a shame when one man’s lifetime achievemnts are held up in front of the hammer.

For those who haven’t seen it there is a fascinating autobiography, “Faster than the Sun”. (Available on amazon etc)

As we dont know the family circumstances, we shouldnt judge them for the sale, shame though it is.

It actually strikes me as rather a sad little collection; a reminder of a life well lived.

That is shameful. Many years ago he was approached by FAAM with a view to photocopying his logbooks for the archives. He declined, stating that the originals would come their way in the fullness of time.

Seems not, now.

There are some entries I’d dearly love to check. Indeed I wrote to him on that very subject late in 2010 but it seems it was too late by then anyway.
