Spitfire Replica – Tangmere Museum

The grapevine tells me, although I am not sure how reliably, that the Spitfire V replica (234 Sqn, Plt Off Axel Svendsen) is due to be removed from Tangmere Museum.

Can anyone confirm or otherwise? If correct, where is it going to?

The Svendsen family provided the replica as a monument to Axel, along with a cash donation, and I was involved with that project.

If the story is correct then I’d be keen to know what the plans might be.

Hindenburg

One easy explanation; politics and personalities. There has been much discussion here about other such situations with other museums. An all too common a thread and here is not the place to discuss the tedious detail of that. However; been there, done that, got the tee-shirt. And the scars! Am delighted to have been the person who kicked the whole idea off, and to have been more than instrumental in getting it where it is today. Less delighted how some were apallingly treated by those who came along later when all the hard work had been done, our private money spent (and risked!) and all the tears shed. However, am not in the slightest bitter and life has moved on in other positive directions and whilst I mean no slight (I wish the place well!) I would no longer want to be involved with that museum or any other.

Back to the Spitfire replica; does anyone know?

Errrrrrr……no!

Whilst the museum was my concept in 1974, and I was one of the joint founders, I have had no involvement there for over ten years.

Oh!!What a shame, why`s that? when we first met think you were still there…great museum…my first aerojumble…did really well.took my dad and brother and slept in a caravan on site..1990 ? Dad couldn`t believe how much I was selling the early cloth oxygen/microphone bits for..he thought they were petrol caps..they had a lovely crashed Stirling Throttle box………………

Slightly off-topic, but wasn’t the Revell 1/72 Spit VB kit supplied with decals for this aircraft? Been a while since I’ve built one of them.

I don’t know about any plans Andy.. but here is a picture I took of it on Wednesday when I visited! Great little museum they have down there now – I was last there about 20 years ago!!

P.s. We met at the Shoreham Aerojumble, I read the forums everyday but don’t often post.. also enjoying the ‘war digs’ show immensely. 🙂
