A query for the Battle of Britain Enthusiasts!

And those with knowledge of crash sites! Such as Gareth, Andy, Paul, Ian….

I have acquired a nice item that was ploughed up in the mid to late 1960s.

The history is thus:- it came from a Hurricane that crashed into a field on a farm near Lyminge (near Hawkinge)….any ideas on possible serial numbers please ?!

It would be lovely to reunite this item with its history.

Paul Cole is helping out….. Thanx Andy.

Smythe’s Hurricane did go in and someone has recovered the spade grip. So that is one eliminated!
Paul suggests that the crash would likely have not gone in deep (since the grip was in the plough line). The grip shows signs of a fierce fire.

No worries.

The book to which you refer is now behind me, thankfully!

Onwards and upwards with other projects. First, one on Ju 87 raids during the Battle of Britain then one on the DH9 reconstructions.

When is your book out, Tony?

Cheers Gareth….it is a very early Hurricane spade grip (no slit)…the farmer found it in the mid to end of 60’s whilst ploughing. He thought it was cooker gas ring. The chap I got it from acquired it in 1970. All we know is that it was Lyminge immediate area.

Any help appreciated as it would be nice to restore some history to this lovely item!

Mark Kirby is probably your man for information, and he is just as likely to come up straight away with the information you seek. Give him a call!

Another possible contender is Hurricane V6572 flown by P/O Pniak which crashed on August 24th 1940….
I was hoping to find the possible contenders and then try a process of elimination.

Another option: F/O W. Januszewicz, 303 (Polish) Squadron who was shot down 5th October 1940. Aircraft crashed in flames at Stowting, near Lyminge. He probably flew Hurricane P3892.

From TOCH here: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=22530

Edit: 😀 you typed that one faster than me.

It does show fire damage.
I found one which might be close…..5th October 1940, 303 (Polish) Squadron. F/O Januszewicz his aircraft crashed in flames at Stowting, near Lyminge. Hurricane P3892.
I need to identify possible contenders and then see what was/has been recovered.
