RAF Sabre photo

I have received some new photos and information recently for a page on my website on Keith Fitton DFC, who lived in Cambridge, NZ before WWII.

he was a pilot on the RNZAF during the war and postwar he flew with the RAF. See the coloured photo of him next to an RAF Sabre on his page at the bottom:
http://www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/Keith%20Fitton.htm

I’m interested to know what the rest of the aircraft looked like, in terms of markings and colours. And also find out which Sabre squadron it belonged to, he flew them with No. 234 Squadron and No. 3 (F) Squadron.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks Pagen01 for the link to that model, great colour scheme. I note that the model is also K like the one Keith is next to, though it lacks the red gear door of Keith’s machine.

Cheers vampiredave, I will change that mistake later.

A good place to start would be Duncan Curtis’ book on the Canadair Sabre. It has chapters devoted to all the RAF squadrons and is lavishly illustrated.

Incidentally, in the round up of Keith’s RAF career, it should be 229 OCU, Chivenor.

Hi Dave, I run a website dedicated to RAF Worksop. Do you know what he did at the airbase – Guessing it was a refresher course if he was in a 4FTS Meteor?

The paint finish of the era was gloss finish when first applied, to give a high speed finish.
3 Sqn Sabres seem quite hard to find pics of, there is a model one here just to show the apearence, http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/korean/us/usaf/hbsabre4.htm

Nice colour picture of Keith with the Sabre btw.

Thanks, so it was camouflaged, I wasn’t sure. Great, thanks. The paint looks quite glossy, but I’m not sure, maybe it is just wet as the ground looks like it could be damp too.

Not brilliant, but this 3 Sqn page gives an idea of what their Sabres looked like,

That’s a 3 Squadron Sabre (234 had a red intake ring)

It also had yellow outlined green bars either side of the roundel. Colours were Dark Sea Grey/Dark Green over PRU Blue
