Richard Hillary's Spitfire

Yes, yet another another Spitfire thread! :p

Here’s something I’ve wondered a number of years; according to records P/O Richard Hillary was shot down off Margate on the 3 September 1940 while flying Spit I X4277. Now Hillary is a bit vague about it, but X4277 seems to have arrived at Hornchurch maybe a day or two after 603sqn moved in at the end of August. He seems to have got it the same time Al Deere got X4276 to replace Not Kiwi IV (the one blown up on take off.)

Which leaves me with two questions:

What happened to his Spitfire from Montrose, Sredni Vashtar and what was the serial?

Can anyone shed any light?

According to “The Greatest Squadron of Them All” by David Ross with Bruce Blance and William Simpson Vol 1 page 325 the aircraft was Spitfire Fmk1A XT-M L1021 forced landing 29-8-1940 near Lympne.

X4277 ff 27-8-1940 was at 6 MU 28-8-1940. When it was shot down it had 7.45 hrs (same source)
