Having just watched the Battle of Britain programme with Ewan McGregor and his brother, I was reminded of the Spitfire displays by Ray Hanna in MH434.
In 1971, I was detached for the Biggin Hill Airshow and ended up marshalling Ray Hanna in and then refuelling the aircraft three times. He told me how to do it the first time, showing me the little crowbar inside the pilots fold-down door.
Point is, I was stood on the wing refuelling in my white overalls and lots of people were taking photos. I’ve never seen any of them.
Has anyone seen any?
I would love to see one. Due to this, I ended up flying professionally for nearly 40 years – actually as a flight engineer. But had it not been for Ray Hanna and that experience, I probably wouldn’t have bothered.
