Stuart. They did ask him for his recollections and they are in the report. Their conclusion is that he more likely entered a spin than a spiral dive.

“It is likely that the pilot started to recover but tried to pitch up before the aircraft had built sufficient airspeed leading to a secondary spin.”

Many have come unstuck having stopping the rotation of a spin and then started recovery from the dive too early.
