I’m close to completing 120+ 1:72 scale drawings of all the Schneider Trophy racers and projects along with accompanying text and photographs, the result of many years of research. These drawings fit nicely onto A4 in landscape format so the question is … is that a viable size to publish in book form?

It is not an ideal size for larger run books. I have published books at 280×220, which co-incidentally is the size of the Crowood Aviation Series, but on the last printing the printers asked me to change to 280 x 216 so that they could get the pages onto the larger sheet.

In my view, absolutely. I have published several books in that paper size. I suspect that soft-back, pefect bound format will suit best regarding the eventual Retail Price; hard bound in such a format will be perhaps a fair bit too expensive.
One suggestion from experience: make sure your print paper is heavy and gloss. Both parameters as much as you can afford. Line drawings on anything less than, say, 150 gm gloss paper will lack the sharpness required to display such detail as rivets (especially in 1:72).
