This has just appeared on the Daily Mail website
“The RAF planned to deploy Vulcan bombers deep within Argentine territory to stop any attempts to retake the Falkland Islands, it has been claimed.
A top team of veteran pilots spent months plotting the raids, preparing to fly hundreds of miles into Argentina in the cover of darkness to destroy runways and prevent the airforce from taking off.
Historian Rowland White said the commander in charge ‘was left in no doubt at all that attacks against the Argentine mainland were now his squadron’s raison d’être’.
With the war’s 30th anniversary looming, the release of the plans, which show just how close the RAF came to attacking the mainland, may further upset relations between the two countries”
Two questions…
1 – How much of this is fact, and how much is just the Daily Mail fantasizing?
2 – Has Vulcan XH558 found itself a new job?
Re the second question, if Argentina gets belicose about the Falklands, the MoD could always rent XH558 back (“Iron Eagle” style..!)
