Hello all,
A little known air logistics exercise occured at RAF Driffield long after this airfield ceased operational flying. Over the period 9-16 December 1969, Argosies and Hercules aircraft of then Transport Command flew in from various points and departed as shown on the chart below.
These are extracts from official paperwork (SRO’s) from that year and were about to be binned, preceeding the transfer of Driffield to the Army in 1978, who re-named it Alamein Barracks. Unfortunetly during the passage of time I have mis-laid the colour coded airfield map as stated in the narrative, but thought I would post the remainder as I suspect this 1969 exercise was not widely known outside Yorkshire (Humberside) then, or even now.
The following year BAe used Driffield for Buccaneer assembly and flight testing, (XV352-XV361?), while the runway at its own airfield of Holme-on Spalding-Moor, 20 miles away ,was under repair.
