Here are some photos from yesterday’s Press launch of the RAF Museum’s recently completed Sopwith Dolphin Mk.1 C3988.
It’s a real beauty that you really need to see for yourselves rather than relying on photos. The attention to detail and standard of finish is wonderful.

Good to hear that some of the gaps might be addressed but the interwar period remains not very well represented.
Fury, Siskin and Gauntlet spring to mind although the opportunity for anything larger must be negligible
Always felt that Old Warden was a more appropriate home of the Hanriot anyway……

I thought a Snipe was being built in N.Z for the RAFM
And a Harry Tate & Albatros if the rumour mill is correct. Perhaps some of us might mind losing the Hanriot and Farman though?

Anybody else feel that the Camel should share space with it’s WW1 brethren, rather than hanging in the Millstone of Flight?
I totally agree. Get it down from the ceiling!

Beautiful restoration. I wouldn’t fancy trying to get out of it in a hurry though….
Even getting in, in a Sidcot suit, must have been a squeeze.
It is – I helped him into it!

It would be good if they could pull together any remaining Siskin parts to do a similar job to that they have done on the Dolphin, which is truly stunning.
Perhaps some kind benefactor could fund the construction of another Snipe in New Zealand for the RAFM – after all the Snipe was the RAF’s first fighter.

An internet search will find an article on flying the Old Rhinebeck Sopwith Dolphin replica which makes interesting reading on the flying characteristics of the type

Great work by the RAFM – a fine looking new addition which gives an obvious reason to pay another visit.
A good week for rebuilds with the Vampire T11 as well.

Excellent job, especially in the 100th anniversary year of Sopwith. There used to be a large photo (about 15 ft wide) of Dolphins under production in the Kingston Polytechnic engineering library that was housed in the old Canbury Park factory where they were produced.
