To ensure the safety of he aircraft and crew, the American bombs required to be dropped from a minimum of 31,000 ft. Did a Lancaster ever reach that altitude – empty or without a bomb load? 

The America leaders were very protective of there Atomic technology. I can’t believe they would have considered having the British drop one for them.  They had plenty of B29 to do the job for them. The first two missions to drop the live bombs required a round trip distance of more than 2,700 nm. Stripped of all armaments the B29 aircraft were still grossly over weight.
