I have recently picked up a kit bag dated 1940, it has the service number and the initials of the prvious owner but I am unable to trace who he was as the MOD only release that information to family. Is there any other way of finding out who he was ?
I have a found a potential canidate P/O A. G. Wainwright is there any way of finding his service number the one on the bag is 1241014

Did officers have kit bags?
The number appears to be an enlisted man at first glance.
Yes it is an enlisted mans the only way to trace the enlisted man is download all Air 78 W’s and read through them till you get a match on Service number

Yes the 1940 date would be related to the date it was made at least that applies to aircraft parts. Paulm, I got the name from the B of B honour roll as I did not know where else to look.
How do I check the air 78 records? is it online
Thanks
Graham

Can’t see a Serviceman A G. Wainwright on Air 78 witrh those numbers..
I checked London Gazette as well and the number didn’t come up
I would suggest the only option is to check all Air 78 record for surname = ‘W’ and see if you get a match on servicenumber a long job!
I would guess that your P/O A.G. Wainwright is actually P/O ALEC GEORGE WAINWRIGHT 73 Sqn kiled 21/01/1941 who comissioned number 84675 and serviceman service number was 742052 – He is in Air 78-163

Is the 1940 related to the year of manufacture not the year of issue? In that case it may have been manufactured in 1940 but the actual issue date could be ’41 or a very long shot of 1942, worth a thought I guess.
If you do think it belonged to an Officer, a trawl through the Air Force List for those years in the National Archive may throw something up perhaps?

I could turn up matching the initials for 1940 was A G Wainright.
Hope you do not mind me ansking but what 1940 reference did you use to match AGW with P/O A G. Wainright? and do you have his full name?
Thanks
Paul

Hello Paul
The bag is A/M marked with a 1940 date on the hood, on the front it has A.G.W. and the number 1241014.the number is repaeted inside the bag again on the hood, the only name I could turn up matching the initials for 1940 was A G Wainright.

Graham why do yopu think it’s P/O Wainwright?
1241014 is a service number allocated to a serviceman (not officer in April 1940 at Cardington) – Of course he may have been comissioned later
