Friendship 7, 1962-2012

Fifty years ago today, a trio of engines roared to life with huge yellow flames. Amidst clouds of smoke and liquid oxygen, Mercury-Atlas 6 carrying Friendship 7 and astronaut John Glenn was on its way to orbit.

I fear the feat won’t mean much to the generrations having grown up with space flight and moon landings a reality.
