Hi
Been searching for accident cards, the IWM have 3 concerning the Whirlwind, Hendon have microfilm copies, but are these the same as the three below at IWM or do they hold more?
A total of 34 Whirlwinds were lost through accidents
Type: Whirlwind 1 (P-7103); Location: Aylsham Norfolk; Report No.: W1229 1942 May
Type: Whirlwind (P-7003); Location: Highwood Heath Nr Wool; Report No.: W1327 1942 Sept
Type: Whirlwind (P-7059); Location: Warmwell; Report No.: W1392 1942 Dec
On another path…
Can someone PM me contact details for Philip Jarrett please?

Ian…
One of the Norfolk loss reports does include several copies of the same large format cockpit photo, the cockpit having separated from the wings and rear fuselage.
😮
Cockpit photo?
Ian, you have a PM…
Hi
Sorry thought you already had these, the photos from the NA crash file are now in my folder on the project page together with the drawings from the file, if you need to delete them from there feel free.
I have the crash reports from the NA I will try to find them and upload them as well.
Cheers

The loss of second prototype L6845 is well described, including the results of the rolls Royce strip down of the engine. As a messy, but still fatal, forced landing there is nothing left at the crash site .
Hi
The remains of L6845 were recovered in the 70’s by an aircraft group, I seem to recall that the parts they got were on display in a museum, somewhere near bristol, maybe even in wales ?
There was a small article in an old edition of BAAC magazine, sorry but I got rid of mine years ago.

Ross…
Your detailed information on the AIB accident reports is far more than I had hoped for, it will be put to very good use…
Thank you so very much.

There is some useful information in the Avia files. The loss of second prototype L6845 is well described, including the results of the rolls Royce strip down of the engine. As a messy, but still fatal, forced landing there is nothing left at the crash site. The report on P7003 gives no more information on location than listed here. Highwood Heath is an active Army training area so a challenge to search. One of the Norfolk loss reports does include several copies of the same large format cockpit photo, the cockpit having separated from the wings and rear fuselage. It made an impression on me in that the pilot’s blood was clearly visible on the seat.

The AIB reports have some photos but most do not.
AVIA 5 at the TNA are the most complete.
I supplied Mike with the photos from P7008 but there are here as well

F1188 was an early form for Forced Landings rather than Accidents and are all known as Accident Cards held by Hendon

AVIA 5/21 is the AIB accident reports at The National Archive and contains the pages for these accidents. I sent a copy of the Exeter loss to Ian from an earlier AVIA 5 file.
The accident cards at Hendon are Form1188/Form1180 but they may also have AIB reports held seperately.
AIB file reference is shown on the Form1180 in the AIB box but not attached to the Form 1180.
Hi Ross
Thank you for your reply, showing my ignorance here, it’s the reports we want and then really only those with photos that show the internal structure and / or diagrams showing measurements…
Whats the difference between Forms 1180 – 1188
Regards
Stuart
