BRISTOL’S famous Brabazon Hangar – the birthplace of Concorde – could have an unromantic future as a storage and distribution warehouse.
Planning permission has been given by Bristol City Council for a change of use and alterations to create 18 loading bays for HGV lorries.
Campaigners who are fighting to save Filton Airfield said it was incredibly sad that the hangar could be reduced to such a mundane end.
Paul Lee, one of the campaigners, said: “This building is a major part of Bristol’s history.
“It is a building that gave birth to the world’s most advanced airliner and it deserves more than this.
“For it to be reduced to the level of a mundane warehouse is incredibly sad.
“At a time when British Airways are looking for maintenance hangars, it is also a wasted opportunity for local investment.”

It’s good news that any aerodrome structure is preserved. It matters not if a structure is no long retained for its original purpose. Hats off to anyone who can reuse any hangar or other airfield building.

Warehouse
No shame in that. As said earlier, it’s better than demolition.
Maybe one day it will become an aviation museum:) but at least it will still be there for the choice to be made.

It’d be lovely to one day see the Concorde and the aircraft of the Bristol Aero Collection at home in the hangar made into a new air museum for Bristol, but if this is impossible, then at least it’s being to put to some use…

This is probably as good an outcome as any reasonable person might expect.
Whilst it would all very nice to preserve this or that, there has to be a sensible and economic limit to such aims.

Currently i understand the local ice hockey team were trying to by one the hangar to put a rink in after the council shut down theirs 🙂 anyone around Filton who could help?

Totally agree, better a warehouse than being demolished and recycled. Look at Speke, if it wasn’t for Marriott’s taking over the Speke terminal as a hotel etc, it would have gone the way of a lot of abandoned buildngs…. it is all part and parcel of the history of a building..

Surely this is a fantastic outcome, when you consider that demolition was mentioned not long ago.
It would be unrealistic to expect this great building to carry on having a future in aviation, or anything ‘glamourous’ and at the very least a warehouse will ensure taht the Brabazon sheds survives and is maintained.

It may be sad, but this is commercial enterprise today that we just have to accept. Much like Croydon Airport’s Terminal building being turned into a hotel.
As long as the infrastructure of the hangar doesn’t change and its historical significance is retained, this should not be a problem. It is indeed a great shame that no further aviation use can be made of it, but better it’s kept in commercial use than broken up and a housing estate built on the ground.
